Alasdair has experience of patent work in a wide range of areas, including electronic circuitry, semiconductor structures, ink-jet and electrophotographic printing systems, semiconductor chip exposure systems, signal processing and control systems, in addition to general mechanical devices. He specialises in drafting and prosecuting patent applications, and advising on validity and infringement.

Alasdair entered the patent profession in 1978, after graduating from Oxford University with a degree in Philosophy and Psychology, and qualified in 1981. Subsequently, he specialised in Electronics and obtained an HNC in Electronic Engineering from the Polytechnic of the South Bank in 1986. He has advised clients of all sizes, from multinational corporations to private individuals and has experience of preparing and registering patent assignments.

Alasdair takes a keen interest in issues in patent law, and has published articles on the interpretation of two-part claims, on the effect and interpretation of various rules under the European Patent Convention, and on the correct definition of the problem in examination of inventive step at the EPO, and has submitted ‘amicus briefs’ to the Enlarged Board of Appeal of the European Patent Office on European divisional applications, on the patentability of computer software claims and on the correction of an appellant’s name.
