Recent research commissioned by the St Albans City of Expertise Group (which may be found here) shows that numerous local businesses are intending to enter new markets over the next 2 years – great news for the local economy.

Expanding into new markets does, however, carry risks that companies may inadvertently end up infringing intellectual property rights owned by a third party, where those rights don’t extend to the UK but do cover the new markets into which companies are expanding.

It’s also important to make sure that intellectual property, particularly brands, are properly protected in new markets. Many countries outside the UK provide very little protection to brands which have been used but are not registered as trade marks, so companies really are leaving themselves vulnerable to being ripped off if they don’t put protection in place.
