A Reading-based intellectual property law specialist has chaired a professional webinar on patent exemptions, known as Bolar exemptions, which affect pharmaceutical researchers.

Dr Adrian Bradley, a Partner and Chartered Patent Attorney at Cleveland Scott York, chaired the webinar, organised by the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) on Tuesday 13 February 2018.

Entitled ‘Bolar and Related Exemptions in Europe – what do they protect?’, the seminar examined the differences in the exemptions in national law across key European jurisdictions relating to the rights of pharmaceutical companies to manufacture generic versions of patented drugs for trials and research before the expiration of the patent.

CIPA is the representative body for Patent Attorneys in the UK and offers a regular programme of continuing professional development to its members.

Dr Bradley said: “The scope of Bolar provisions in different European jurisdictions is of substantial importance to manufacturers of branded and generic pharmaceutical alike.

“Ultimately, this affects the drugs available to end-users in doctors and their patients.

“I am delighted to have been able to facilitate this important discussion for Chartered Patent Attorneys to share their knowledge and best practices.”

In addition to its office in Reading, Cleveland Scott York has offices in the City of London, St Albans and Brussels.[:]
